Dear Friends and Family,
I am participating in the Walk4Hearing Loss on May 14th, 2016. Why don't you join my team? The more walkers or online contributors we have, the broader our reach will be in raising awareness for hearing loss and increase awareness of deaf culture. Your participation will help make this a successful walk. Come join for a day of communication!
The money we raise goes to HLAA, both at the national and local levels to fund outreach and awareness programs. Fanwood gets 40% of all the money our team raises. That money is ear marked to purchase a new speech and language test for the Speech Department and if any is left, it will support the 200th Anniversary celebration of New York School for the Deaf (NYSD).
For the deaf, deafness does not have a stigma associated with it. Team Fanwood celebrates all people, no matter the degree of hearing or the degree of deafness. To be fully deaf is to have membership in a deaf community and within that community there exists a deep and full culture. We support ongoing efforts to keep American Sign Language pure and the deaf community respected. At the same time, some on Team Fanwood do use hearing technology and they do maintain their connection with sound. In this regard, Team Fanwood is thought to be bicultural.
Thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing you at the Walk4Hearing Loss!
Be sure to wear your Fanwood blue and yellow clothing when you attend the walk! Thanks! :-)
