It is that time of year again! Last year Brynlee's Brigade raised a little over $3,000. I am shooting for the stars this go around and want to raise $4,000 as a team! I know we can do it!
The Hearing Loss Association o f America (HLAA) Walk4Hearing increases awareness about hearing loss, helps to eradicate the stigma associated with it and raises funds to provide information and support for people with hearing loss. Since 2006, the Walk4Hearing has raised more than $9 million and has become the largest walk for hearing taking place in cities across the United States.
We walk because hearing loss is a public health issue third in line after heart disease and arthritis.
- 48 million people have some form of hearing loss
- 26 million people have noise-induced hearing loss that could have been prevented
- 2 to 3 out of every 1,000 children are born deaf or with a hearing loss
- 60 percent of the people with hearing loss are either in the work force or in educational settings
On April 3rd 2013, our lives changed forever as our beautiful daughter, Brynlee Elizabeth Taylor, was born. She was welcomed into this world surrounded with the love of our friends and family. It came as a shock to learn that our sweet angel was born profoundly deaf in both ears. Deciding what route to take from her diagnosis was one of the hardest battles we have ever faced. Ultimately, we decided that Brynlee's best option would be receiving the cochlear implant. The cochlear implant would allow her to hear the simple sounds that we take for granted every day ; hearing the words 'I love you', listening to the thunder and rain during a summer storm, hearing the 'Beep! Beep!' of a car horn. On April 18th 2014, we were lucky enough to get Brynlee into surgery for the cochlear implant and now she is welcomed into the hearing world! Yes, we still have many struggles that we will face along the way, but we will never forget the moment she was able to hear our voices for the first time.
She has had both cochlear implants for over a year now and we are very excited to see her mature and respond to hearing through both of her ears. We are so proud of her and can't wait to see her grow! The Walk4Hearing is just a small tribute for us to try to give back and help others who haven't been as fortunate as we were. I encourage you to join my team and/or donate to this wonderful cause that has been extremely close to our hearts!
