Hi, my name is Gloria Fan. My 12-year old son, Ian, and I will be walking in the Walk4hearing walk a thon on Oct. 15th to raise funds for our favorite program- The Children’s Cochlear Implant Center at UNC. They are a non-profit organization who help children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing to listen and talk. In addition to world -renowned pediatric cochlear implant care, they feature individualized therapy for children with all levels of hearing loss.
Please click on the above video taken when Ian was 5 years old in the preschool program at UNC. It reminds me how much The Children's Cochlear Implant Center has impacted Ian's language development and life.
From birth to age 2, Ian lost all of his hearing and became deaf. It was a painful time for our family as we processed what this all meant for Ian and his future. We had to get Ian the help he needed to communicate and learn. Up until age 4, we tried speech therapy through the state program, but very little progress was made. Ian had a lot of speech and language to catch up on. He was critically behind.
When Ian was 4 ½ years old, we signed him up for the preschool at the Children’s Cochlear Implant Center; he stayed in the program for two full years. The staff was very supportive. With their guidance and expertise in teaching the parent and child, we slowly made progress and by the time Ian finished his 2nd year in the program, he was kindergarten-ready!
Today, he is a mainstreamed 6th grader who loves going to his big brother's school. He plays the clarinet, basketball, and is learning Chinese at school. Ian is really enjoying it! This was all possible with the solid start he received at the Children’s Cochlear Implant Center at UNC.
The Children’s Cochlear Implant Center UNC REACH program now provides support to a broader geographical population. Through teleconferencing technology, children and their families all over NC and other states receive quality audiology and speech-language services regardless of their ability to pay. No family is turned away. Funds raised by the Walk4Hearing walkathon help make this possible! Your donations also subsidize the coaching of professionals in the skills and knowledge to serve children with hearing loss all across the state. This year they had a significant reduction in their allocation from the State; so every dollar will help!
You are not only helping our favorite program at UNC; but you are also supporting our favorite national organization, the Hearing Loss Association of America. They provide assistance and resources for people with hard-of-hearing and their families to live successfully with hearing loss. The efforts of this organization open the world of communication to people with hearing loss through information, education, support and advocacy.
Help us reach our $10,000 goal by donating today and joining our team. Thank you for your support!
