This is Eli and Avery Reiman. Our B’nai Mitzvah is May 20th, 2017, and for our Mitzvah project, we are raising money for the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA). The HLAA is a National Non-Profit organization that advocates for people with hearing loss. Every year we participate in the New York CIty Walk for Hearing, a 5k walk that raises money for the HLAA.
The reason we do this is because I, Eli, have a hearing loss. I was diagnosed 9 years ago with a bilateral sensorineural, moderate-severe hearing loss. I have hearing aids and have had them ever since I was diagnosed at four years old. As I get older the technology continues to get better which has made my life easier. We are committed to continuing to help raise money to further advances for people with hearing loss like me.
It is a challenge sometimes to live with someone who is hearing impaired, but my family and I do everything we can to make it easier for Eli. As Eli’s sister, I sometimes have to make certain sacrifices; for instance we have to be tolerant of hearing Eli’s music through his headphones because he needs it to be so loud, or sometimes watching TV with the closed captions on (which I admit I actually really like), or having to talk really loudly at night when we are going to sleep because his aids aren't in...But, I know that is nothing compared to some of his struggles.
The 2017 New York Walk 4 Hearing is on September 24th and we would love for you to join us as part of Team E.A.R. If you can’t make the walk, please sponsor our team!
