This is 7th year our family will be "walking" in the NYC Walk4Hearing. This year however the walk will be a bit different as we are celebrating the NYC community - virtually! The NYC Walk4Hearing Walk Day will take place on, Sunday, October 4th. Our family will continue to walk to show support for people with hearing loss especially our HEARo, ANDREW!!!
For 16 years hearing loss has been a part of our family's life, especially Andrew's. We were very lucky that newborn hearing screenings were conducted at the hospital where Andrew was born, and Andrew's hearing loss was detected at birth. As a result, Andrew was bilaterally aided at just 2 1/2 months old. Fortunately, he benefits from the use of hearing aids. However, unlike glasses, hearing aids do not make your hearing "perfect," rather hearing aids ampllifies sounds. We have never let having a hearing loss define Andrew. He is a soccer playing, basketball loving, energetic, fun, feisty young man who just happens to have a hearing loss.
The Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) Walk4Hearing increases awareness about hearing loss, helps to eradicate the stigma associated with it and raises funds to provide information and support for people with hearing loss. Since 2006, the Walk4Hearing has raised more than $7.7 million and has become the largest walk for hearing taking place in cities across the United States.
Hearing loss affects one's ability to communicate every day in different situations - from a dinner conversation at a noisy restaurant, on the phone, to not hearing alarm clocks and smoke alarms. For people with hearing loss, these situations can be become obstacles without the right information and support. HLAA provides the assistance and resources for people with hearing loss and their families to learn how to adjust to living with hearing loss.
Thank you very much for supporting ANDREW, our family and the many other individuals and families affected by hearing loss and remember to walk on Ocotber 4th!!
