Sponsor Ellen for the NYC Walk4Hearing
I will be participating in the 2020 Virtual NYC Walk4Hearing. This is the 15th year I have been involved with the Walk4Hearing, and I still feel as strongly as I did the first year. It is vital that we raise awareness and funds for hearing loss projects. There is still a stigma attached to hearing loss and the use of hearing assistive devices, preventing those who need help from seeking it. Hearing loss is the third major health issue in this country, affecting 48 million Americans. And it is projected that in the next few decades the incidence of hearing loss will grow exponentially because the large population of baby boomers are becoming senior citizens, an age group where there is more potential for hearing loss; young people are playing MP3 players/iPods too loud causing them noise-induced hearing loss; and we are living longer and more active lives, with more potential for hearing loss, not to mention the substantial number of returning veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq with hearing loss.
Hearing loss is not the inconvenience of old age some people think; it is a significant disability affecting people of all ages. Untreated hearing loss causes people to isolate, affects their ability to earn a living, impacts their personal relationships and diminishes their quality of life. Studies show untreated hearing loss can cause dementia and cognitive decline. People who isolate often become severely depressed.
Please help me raise the money we so desperately need to educate, advocate for, support and inform all those with untreated hearing loss. Our virtual Walk is on Oct. 4.
Thank you for being who you are -- my good, caring friends and family.
