The NYC Walk4hearing will take place on Sunday, September 25th, and the Pope Gang has its walking shoes lined up. I hope you will walk with us or support me again – or both!
So many good things have come out of this walk.
HLAA is spreading the word that hearing loss needs to be treated and treated promptly.
HLAA is educating people who have hearing loss about how important it is to stay tuned in – both for our brains and for our relationships.
HLAA is working to make hearing aids more affordable.
HLAA is educating people with normal hearing about the challenge of having hearing loss, and how best to communicate with someone who has it.
HLAA is connecting parents and children who have felt isolated by their hearing loss. We hear every year what a difference this walk has made in their lives, how transforming it is for both parents and children to meet others who are dealing with the same challenge.
HLAA is making it possible for many hearing loss organizations to raise money for their programs, and we are raising money for our own.
HLAA Is working to make life easier for people with hearing loss. More and more places are installing audio induction loops which allow us to hear by just flipping a switch on our hearing aids. Six Broadway theaters and several off Broadway ones including Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont have installed loops. The summer NYC film festivals are now all captioned, and the most popular long-running Broadway shows are as well. The list of spaces where we can hear keeps growing longer.
Your generous support over the years has made all this change possible. But our work isnt yet done. Too many people with heairng loss don't understand the importance of prompt treatment. Too many people with hearing loss don't understand that they need to speak up and speak out about hearing loss. This year we are having a Call To Action -- asking everyone who has a hearing loss to speak up and speak out about what they need to stay connected and productive members of our world.
Please help us make this invisible problem visible. Thank you so much!
