As one of 48 million Americans living with hearing loss, I am very excited to launch my 2018 Long Beach Walk4Hearing fundraiser!!! This annual event, held on multiple dates in cities around the U.S., raises awareness and funds for the national Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) and its local chapters — in my case, the Los Angeles chapter, where I currently serve as Membership/Outreach Chair on the Steering Committee.
Our regional walk takes place on Saturday, June 9 in Long Beach, and my intention is to raise at least $500, in honor of my birthday on May 7. It may be June now, but I am still celebrating! ;-)
This year's call to action is “Get Your Hearing Checked!” Untreated hearing loss affects overall health in negative ways – falls, isolation, anxiety, depression, and now, a link between untreated hearing loss and cognitive decline. It affects one's ability to communicate every day in different situations - from a dinner conversation at a noisy restaurant, on the phone, to not hearing alarm clocks and smoke alarms. For people with hearing loss, these situations can be become obstacles without the right information and support.
Even if you've had great hearing all of your life, it's a good idea to monitor for age-related issues once you hit 60 or so. A huge percentage of people who could benefit greatly from wearing hearing aids, don't...whether from ignorance, denial, vanity, or for financial reasons (since devices are generally and inexplicably NOT covered through health insurance).
On a national level, HLAA supports legislation to make hearing devices more affordable, while local chapters provide a safe place for people and their families to learn how to adjust to living with hearing loss.
For most of my life, I have personally experienced the stigma, difficulties and obstacles of living day-to-day life in a hearing world. Please help celebrate my birthday by supporting my campaign!
Thanks and Blessings,
