My daughter Charlotte is 1 years old and was born with significant hearing loss. She wears hearing aids for now. Prior to her birth, my wife and I had little to no experience around people with hearing loss. Now, of course, our eyes have been opened to this vast community who deal with hearing loss every day.
I'm trying to open people's eyes to the struggles of folks like my daughter who will have to go the extra mile to live their best life. One of those most difficult issues, as I understand it, is that people with hearing loss often become socially isolated because of difficulties interacting with others. Some of the ways that you can help socialize with the hearing loss community is to turn down background noise, like the TV or dishwasher, call or say their name before you start talking, speak slowly and clearly, raising your voice can distort the sound of your words, face the person when you speak so they can see your mouth and gestures, and try to talk in areas that are well lit, quiet, and calm.
Hopefully we can raise awareness and funding to help support the millions of people who deal with hearing loss on a daily basis!
Please support my Walk4Hearing if you can! Thanks!
