My name is Tatum. I'm the team captain for Tate's Troop. I'm 16 years old, and this walk is important to me because I feel that every person with a hearing loss should have a voice. I've been hard of hearing my whole life. I got hearing aids when I was 3 1/2 years old, and I was in speech therapy for 4 years. Some things are harder for me than for other kids. I have to read lips to understand people, and when it's noisy, it's hard to hear. I wear an FM system in school. It's a device that allows me to hear my teacher better. I also use a CART system to get closed captioning for all my classes.
I participated in this walk for the past five years and my team has raised over $18,000. We are hoping to raise even more money this year! My friends, family and classmates come out to support me and all people with hearing loss. The money we raised the first year went to Connecticut Children's Medical Center for children in need. Last year the money we earned went to Hear Here Hartford. This is an organization for deaf and hard of hearing kids in the area over the age of 12 where they learn advocacy and leadership skills.
This year's Walk4Hearing is on May 21st. I hope you choose to donate to this cause. Together we can make a difference! We are all one united team.
