By Sawyer Drury

Hi my name is Sawyer Drury. I am 7 years old. I was born with Mondini Syndrome, an inner ear malformation, which causes hearing loss in both of my ears. I received my hearing aids when I was 3. My aids have greatly changed my life and the lives of others around me.

I was so excited to participate in Milwaukee’s Walk 4 Hearing. This walk gave me a chance to raise awareness for hearing loss, to help others like me, and to educate those who do not have hearing loss.

While working to raise money, I was able to spread so much awareness around my community about hearing loss. With my parents, I create a short video message telling of my hearing loss that I was able to share with others. My school, Brimfield Grade School, organized a “Pay to Wear Jeans Day” that raised $650! During this day I was able to read a book to my classmates about my hearing loss and answer any of my classmate’s questions. The Peoria Journal Star even came to interview me, and my story was featured on the front page of the Sunday newspaper!

Our team started out with a goal of $500, but we quickly surpassed that goal. Thanks to so many generous people our team raised a total of $6,955! If there was one thing I learned from this walk, it is that I have lots of people who love and support me. On the day of the walk, the weather was freezing, wet, and very windy, but my family finished the entire walk. I had so much fun and it was an experience that I will never forget. I look forward to participating in the 2016 Walk4Hearing. My plan is to be able to help even more people!
