Bear Lake Camp Team Walk4Hearing Featured Team

Campers and Walkers Make Lifelong Friendships By Melissa Behnan (team captain of Bear Lake Camp)
Bear Lake Camp team consisted of teachers of children who are deaf or have a hearing loss, Lions Bear Lake campers and Lions Bear Lake staff members. Hearing loss has affected each one of our team members in a different way. The Walk4Hearing gave us the opportunity to work together and support the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) and other programs that have done so much for people with hearing loss.
HLAA also gave us the opportunity to become an Alliance group and benefit from participating in Walk. A portion of the funds we raised will be given to Lions Bear Lake Camp to be used for the summer session for campers who are deaf or have a hearing loss. Lions Bear Lake Camp helps children who are deaf or have a hearing loss ages 6-17. The camp is owned and operated by Lions Visually Impaired Youth Camp, Inc. and it opened its doors in July 2000. It is financially supported by Lions, Lioness and Leos throughout Michigan. It’s a place where children with hearing loss can come and be surrounded by other children that deal with the same daily challenges.
Personally, this camp has changed my life. I have worked for the camp for many years. Along with all the different and exciting activities, Bear Lake Camp provides an environment where lifelong friendships and support systems are made. On the day of the Walk, these friendship and support systems were so evident in our team. It was incredible for me to see how important the Walk4Hearing was to my team members. They worked so hard and were extremely successful in our fundraising efforts. Our team raised close to $9,000! I am so proud of all of the dedication they put forth for the Walk4Hearing.
The HLAA Walk4Hearing provided us with an opportunity to have a direct impact on a cause that has touch all of our lives. We look forward to participating again next year and for many years to come!
